Change What You Eat and Lose Weight

You are busy, and when you are busy you exercise less and don’t eat as well as you should. But the key to weight loss is burning more calories than you take in, but also eating healthy. You may think you eat fine, but if you take a few minutes to evaluate what you eat, you may start to notice some unhealthy habits. The first question that you should ask yourself is: What types of processed foods do you eat?

Processed foods have added fats and sugars to make them taste better, last longer and cook faster. This hidden extras add on the calories more quickly than most of us realize. Because of this, the typical American diet is loaded with sugar, fat, and sodium, often leading to high blood pressure, low energy, and poor digestion. The best way to reduce your risk for many diseases and health issues is to choose natural and minimally processed foods. Often called “eating clean”.

If you want to eat clean, you need to eat the least processed food with the most nutrients. How? No more fast foods, no more frozen food aisle at the grocery store, choose fresh vegetables and fruits over canned or frozen.

Choose foods that are low in fat, high in fiber, with essential vitamins and minerals. This will control blood sugar, give you more energy for exercise and give you the fiber that you need for better and healthy digestion.

Eating a less processed, healthy diet along with increased exercise can boost your metabolism and help you lose weight. Replacing fast foods and processed foods can help you eat less calories overall and increase the amount of fiber you eat. Additionally, high-fiber whole grains, vegetables, and fruits will help you feel fuller longer causing you to eat less. Did you know that people who eat an additional 14 grams of fiber a day eat 10% less throughout the day.?

Looking for something new and different to add to your weight loss routine? Creating muscle is one of the best ways to increase how many calories you burn. With more muscle, your body burns more calories at rest. Seems easy right? Did you know that Pilates can help you build muscle while helping to create a trimmer appearance?

Pilates is an effective way to not only lose weight, but also to build strength in your core muscles for better posture, balance and flexibility, and it’s not just for the hard core fitness buff. If you're considering taking a Pilates class for the first time, here's what you need to know before you head to the gym.

Pilates, named for its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the early 1900s, is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. A typical routine includes 25 to 50 repetitive strength training exercises put together into what is known as a profile.

Pilates can be adapted to provide a gentle strength training and stability program or a challenging workout for seasoned athletes. By practicing basic Pilates regularly, you can achieve a number of health benefits, including improved core strength and stability, improved balance and posture and improved flexibility.

Because it's essential to maintain proper form to get the most benefit, arrive early to your first class and let the instructor know that you have not practiced Pilates before. A small amount of extra attention for your first experience will make a huge difference.

Exercise for Weight Loss

Being active is an important part of any weight-loss or weight-maintenance program. When you're active, your body uses more calories. When you use more calories than you take in, you lose weight. It really is that simple!

Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound of fat, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. So if you cut 500 calories from your diet each day, you'd lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories). Similarly, if you eat exactly the same amount, but burn an extra 500 each day, you will see the same results.

I’m sure you know where I’m going with this right? Now if you were to cut 500 calories a day AND burn 500 calories a day, you would be able to lose 2 pounds a week and reach your goals even more quickly! Though weight loss can be achieved through diet alone or from exercise alone, it is much more efficient, and much better for the health of your body in the long run to combine the two.

While it is recommended that most healthy adults follow the guidelines set below, your specific goals may impact the amount and type of exercise that will work best for you. The general guidelines are:

  • Do at least two hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (think brisk walking or swimming) or one hour and 15 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (such as running) — preferably spread throughout the week.
  • Strength train at least twice a week.

The chart below shows the estimated number of calories burned while doing various exercises for one hour.

1 Hour Activity 160 lbs 200 lbs 240 lbs
Aerobics, high impact 511 637 763
Aerobics, low impact 365 455 545
Aerobics, water 292 364 436
Bicycle, 10 mph 292 364 436
Jogging, 5 mph 584 728 872
Running, 8 mph 986 1229 1472
Stair treadmill 657 819 981
Swimming laps 511 637 763
Walking 2 mph 183 228 273
Walking 3.5 mph 219 273 327

Mayo Clinic

Keep in mind that this chart does not take into consideration a number of individualized factors that may impact caloric burn- it should be used only as an estimate. For a more individualized number, seek help from a fitness professional to learn your rate of calorie burn.

Weight Loss Through Cardio Exercise

11 Oct 2011

...By Karli Taylor

The best way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit by burning calories through exercise while reducing the amount of calories that you eat each day. Understand that losing weight takes time. Don’t try to lose more than 1/2 pound to 1 pound each week, and don’t eat fewer than 1,200 calories per day. If you are not too excited about the thought of eating less, there is a way to lose weight without cutting back on your intake- just burn more!

To burn one pound of body fat per week try creating a deficit of 500 calories per day, 3,500 calories per week. There is 3,500 calories in one pound of body fat. To do this, fuel your body with high nutrient food and burn off the 500 calories through high intensity cardio.

How Cardio Helps You Lose Weight

You already know that you lose weight when you burn more calories than you eat. Cardio is a key component because you burn many calories at one time by getting your heart rate into your target heart rate zone. You can increase the calorie burn by increasing the intensity of the workout: Go faster, climb hills or change exercises. And since cardio exercises add to your overall calorie deficit by burning calories, you don’t have to cut as many calories from your diet. But one large advantage to cardio is that you can do it anytime, and every day. There is no rest day required to allow your muscles to repair themselves.

Which cardio exercise is best?

Which cardio exercise is the best to lose weight? The one you will do regularly and consistently. Choose some that you enjoy and mix them up. A great idea is interval training. Interval training can be done on any machine that you like, and involves simply changing the intensity for short periods of time called intervals. You can speed up a minute and then return to a comfortable pace for 2, or you can keep your pace the same and add resistance for 1 minute before decreasing it back for 2.

Another way to spice up your cardio is cross-training. Cross- training is simply using different machines either over the course of a week, or even in the same day. If you are someone with a short attention span, try this: Use an elliptical for 15 minutes, then use a stair climber for 15 minutes and finish on the treadmill for 15 minutes.

Cross training is a fun way to keep it new and fresh!

To get an idea of just how much cardio can do for you, check out the following list of common exercises. Below is the number of calories burned for a 150-pound person in 30 minutes:

  • Step aerobics: 340 calories
  • Stationary bike: 238 calories
  • Swimming: 270 calories
  • Walking 4 mph: 170 calories
  • Running 5 mph: 270 calories
  • Mowing the lawn with a push mower: 200 calories

Weight Loss through Regular Exercise

05 Oct 2011

...By Karli Taylor

Though it is true that weight loss goals can be reached through regular exercise, it is not the most efficient way to lose and keep off weight. Regular exercise, combined with healthy eating, is the most efficient and healthy way to control your weight.

Exercise is an important and essential part of effective weight loss. Through exercise, extra calories that otherwise would be stored as fat are burned. It does not matter what type of exercise you engage in. What is important is that you expend more calories than you take in.

Your weight is determined by the number of calories you eat each day minus what your body uses. Everything you eat contains calories, and everything you do uses calories. Any physical activities, in addition to what you normally do, will burn those extra calories. Balancing the number of calories you expend through exercise with the calories you eat will help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Regular physical activity can also improve your mood and the way you feel about yourself. Exercise is likely to reduce depression and anxiety which allows you to better manage stress. This in turn can also help you with balancing and regulating your caloric intake.

Drink Less and Lose More Weight

23 Aug 2011

...By Karli Taylor

Overall we are increasing the amounts of beverages we consume, which may be increasing our caloric intake much more that we think. Most of us are not really mindful of what we are drinking, and don’t pay too much attention. While trying to lose weight, we watch the food we put in our mouths, but what about the drinks?

Your favorite drinks may have more calories than an ice cream cone.

Studies show that we're chugging 411 liquid calories daily. Most of us don’t cut back on food because if the beverages we consume, we typically eat the same amount. While we may be trying to watch what we eat, we also need to watch what we drink.

When we chew, our body recognizes and processes the calories we take in. Some experts suspect that the act of eating (biting and chewing), sends signals to the brain that trigger satiety. We have our favorite double whipped mocha coffee in the morning, some soda for lunch, juice with our snack and a cocktail, or two, once we get home from work. There goes our ability to lose weight.

Keep reading for some helpful tips to remember when sipping your favorite beverages.

Water

Though we no longer need 8 cups of water a day because we get so much water from other sources, we do need to drink the stuff! Drinking water can really help with weight loss. Often, our brain says we are hungry, when actually we are thirsty. Next time you think that you may be hungry between meals, drink a glass of water and then wait 15 minutes. If you are still hungry, then you can have a snack. If not, you were probably dehydrated.

Cocktails

Here is the good news: Women who drink one to two servings of wine, beer, or liquor a day tend to gain less weight over time than teetotalers, according to researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Some studies indicate that regularly drinking a small amount of alcohol may reduce our appetite. Just remember that’s ONE or TWO- anything in moderation can fit into a healthy lifestyle.

Juice

Orange juice makes up most of our fruit juice consumption. If you have a hard time getting enough fruits and vegetables in your diet, then a glass of OJ is fine; however, if you can eat an orange instead of drinking it, that is much better for you. The fiber in an orange is necessary for your diet as well. If you eat enough fruits and vegetables in your diet, than skip the juice. If you absolutely have to have your morning OJ, mix half of the amount you would normally drink with water and enjoy

The bottom line is, when you are trying to lose weight or just eat healthy, no more than 10% of your total daily calories should come from beverages. Remember to check the labels too; some cans have 2 or more servings!

Coffee We Know and Love It

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages throughout the world. The variety of flavors that can be sampled and combined with a wider variety of additions makes Coffee a very diverse versatile vice! Yet this delightful break time beverage has a mixed reputation! Many say that they drink WAY too much coffee throughout the day. Others may say that it makes them jittery. Your pro coffee drinkers look forward to each cup throughout their day either as a treat or a quick, “wake me up.” But what are the positives and negatives that come along with coffee?

Normally black coffee by itself can have a very bitter flavor which puts many people off. Therefore ingredients are added in order to lighten the intensity. These ingredients can either be dairy based, sugar oriented, candy, spices or syrups. So would the problem with coffee be in coffee itself or all the ingredients that can be added?? I don’t know about you but usually I drink my coffee the same way throughout the day. If the same ingredients are added to each cup the calories start to build up! It then becomes a calories in and calories out process.

The caffeine in coffee makes this beverage a diuretic, which means it helps the process of expelling water out of the body. Depending on how much water you drink throughout the day this may cause some issues. Some people get tired, lose focus, become irritable, and can develop stomach problems. Overall is coffee to blame for these negative side effects or is it possibly that other lifestyle factors contribute to the negative symptoms?

Cutting out just 100 calories each day

Diet is DIE with a T on the end of it… How many times have you heard that one? As the temperature rises, we start to think a little bit more about those extra few pounds that have snuck on around our middles and we start throwing around that D word. The last thing any of us want to do is go on a diet, right? Luckily there are ways to ban that bulge without taking drastic measures. The trick: Eat just a little bit less every day at every meal.

In fact, by cutting out just 100 calories each day, you'll lose more than 10 pounds a year. Up that to 250 calories and you're down 26 pounds! Need it gone sooner? Cut 500 calories daily and you'll drop those 26 pounds in half the time. Keep reading for some easy ways to give up a little to lose a lot.

At Breakfast:

  • Use skim milk in place of cream in your coffee.
  • Eat a bowl of high-fiber cereal and you'll consume fewer calories all day.
  • Order bacon, not sausage, with your eggs.
  • Order your toast dry and put on your own butter- just one serving

At Lunch:

  • Use 1 tablespoon of mayo and 1 tablespoon of low-fat cottage cheese to make tuna salad.
  • Put barbecue sauce, not honey mustard, on your chicken sandwich at your favorite fast food joint.
  • Top your burger with onions, lettuce, and tomato and skip the cheese.
  • Ask for the 12-ounce small soda instead of the 21-ounce medium at the drive-through.
  • Slim down your sandwich by using Arnold Select 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins instead of whole wheat bread.
  • Toss your salad with 1 tablespoon of dressing until every lettuce leaf is coated. You'll get away with using half the usual serving size. Try this trick at dinner too.
  • Choose thin crust pizza with veggies on top instead of regular with meat toppings

At Dinner:

  • Choose EITHER butter OR sour cream for your potato
  • Skip the bread before the meal OR if the bread is your favorite part, skip the potato that comes with your entrée
  • Ask for sauces on the side and when you prepare food at home, go easy on the oil, cream and butter in your sauce- use stock instead
  • Have a big salad before you start your entrée
  • Drink water with dinner instead of something caloric
  • Stop eating after your first helping and wait at least 15 minutes before helping yourself to seconds. If you are eating out, eat half of what’s on your plate and do the same thing.

Need A Quick Pick-Me Up?

Proven instant energy boosters

... By Karli Taylor

Need a quick pick me up? Put down the coffee and try one of these proven instant energy boosters.

Stand up. Easy enough, right? Sitting down for long periods of time is actually a huge energy drainer. The less overall activity you do, the less energy is required to keep you functioning, so your body starts to slow down. In order to keep energy levels up, stand up for 2 or 3 minutes for every 30 that you sit.

Still dragging? Walk it off. If standing at your desk is not enough to get you out of your mid-afternoon slump, adding a little bit of movement creates energy. Research shows that just 10 minutes of brisk walking will increase levels of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine in your system and can increase your energy for up to two hours.

While out on your walk, grab a snack for even more added energy. Don’t stroll to the vending machine though - sugary snacks may give you a quick energy burst, but the crash that follows isn’t worth it! The key is to grab a snack with the right mix of nutrients. The fastest way to have sustainable energy without a crash is with a snack that includes carbs, protein, and a little fat. Try an apple with peanut butter or a yogurt with a few almonds for a boost that lasts about 2 hours.

Cardio and Losing Weight

...By Karli Taylor

You come to the gym three days a week and you walk on the treadmill for an hour. You just want to lose a little bit of weight, so that’s really all that you need to do right? If I told you that lifting weights would help you lose weight would you believe me? Many people are afraid that lifting weights will “bulk them up” instead of slim them down, but the opposite is actually true.

In fact, whether you’re trying to lose weight, improve your muscle tone, improve your mobility, or prevent injury, incorporating weight lifting into your exercise routine will give you added benefit than just doing cardio.

Yes, it is true that cardio is the best way to burn a lot of calories in a given period of time. You will burn more calories in 30 minutes of cardio than you do in 30 minutes of weight lifting-BUT there is an after-burn involved in weight training that blows that associated with cardio clear out of the water.

Weight training is about changing your body composition to add lean muscle. Not only will that make your body look leaner and tighter, but lean muscle burns more calories throughout the day than fat.

By adding one pound of lean muscle to your body, you will burn an extra 50 calories a day without moving any more than you do right now. 50 calories doesn’t seem like much, but over a month or a year- it adds up to significant weight loss!

Don’t have time to add extra workout days to your schedule? Try weight training before you hit the treadmill. Split your hour in half and lift for 30 minutes before walking or running for 30. You will get the most out of your hour every time you hit the gym.
